Abstract Objectives To study characteristics of suicidal patients admitted at Chiangrai Regional Hospital, Northern Thailand. Methods The samples were patients admitted at Chiangrai Regional Hospital of suicidal attempt behaviors during January 1994 to June1997. All patients were interviewed, counselled, and collected data by the psychologists to define statistical significance of 20 variables with Chi-square test. Results There were 485 patients; 250 females and 235 males. Suicidal attempt ratio between female and male are 1.06:1. There are 11 statistical significant variables (p‹0.05) correlated to sex differences, i.e., age, education, marital status, occupations, current physical diseases, current psychiatric diseases, reasoning to suicide, methods of suicide, drugs ingested, psychiatric diagnosis, and psychiatric consultation. There are 12 statistical significant variables (p<0.05) correlated to age distributions as child and adolescents, adult, and elderly, i.e., sex, education, marital status, order in siblings ,occupations, current physical diseases, current psychiatric diseases, history of parental death before 10 years old, reasoning to suicide, methods of suicide, psychiatric diagnosis, and psychiatric consultation. There are 7 statistical significant variables (p<0.05) correlated to diagnostic grouping as adjustment disorder and non-adjustment group, i.e., sex, age, current psychiatric diseases, frequency of suicide, reasoning to suicide, methods of suicide, and psychiatric consultation. Summary There are differences of suicidal attempt behaviors between sex, age groups,and, patients with adjustment disorder and non-adjustment group.
