Abstract Method: An epidemiological study of attempted suicide in all governmental hospitals at Rayong province during March-August 1997 was conducted using the case-control method. There were 118 suicide attempters and 223 cases in the control group. Data were analyzed using percentage, Chi-square, Odds Ratio and 95 % Confidence Interval of Odds Ratio. Results: Most of the attempters were 21-45 years olds, finished primary education, married, and were employed. Females were more prevalent with female to male ratio of 2.58:1. They were mostly brought to the hospitals by couples during 6:01-12:00 p.m. The demographic factors related to attempted suicide were educational levels, total family income and its sufficiency. There were 2 statistical significant behavioral factors related suicidal attempts: the individual-behavioral factors; psychiatric illness, drinking, smoking and drinking/smoking when having distress, and, secondly, the interpersonal-behavioral factor; the absence of help-seeking behavior when having distress.
