ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to study the prevalence of suicidal behavior and psychopathology of suicidal adolescents. The sample consisted of students in grade 7 - 9 who lived in Wat Sakeow. The study in the sample of 257 students found one-year prevalence of suicidal behavior to be 34.2 % (suicidal ideation 24.1% and suicidal attempt 10.1%) . Characteristics of suicidal behavior were analysed in 36 cases. Suicidal ideation was found in 86 % and suicidal attempt in 14 % . The age period when suicidal behavior first began was in ea rly and middle adolescence. The most frequent method was toxic substance ingestion and drug overdose. Feeling of hopelessness oncerning the future was the most frequent precipitant. Thirty-six suicidal and 70 non-suicidal adolescents were compared. It was found that suicidal adolescents had more severe psychopathology. The rate of psychiatric disorders of the suicidal group was significantly higher than that of the control group (97.2 % and 27.1 % respectively, P ‹10 -6 ). The most common psychiatric disorder was depression. The suicidal group was found to have more severe psychiatric symptoms as measured by the CDI and the SCL-90, than the control group. History of suicidal behavior and mental illness in the family, chronic physical illness in the child, neglect and physical abuse were significantly more frequent in the suicidal group. One-year follow up of the suicidal subjects revealed 47 % to have repeated suicidal ideation. The prevalence of depression and the degree of hostility in this group was higher than in the group without repeated ideation (P<10 -4 ). This research shows that suicidal behavior is common in adolescents and can continue for a long period of time. Depression and some psychosocial stressors are significant risk factors. Intervention programs should focus on adolescents with these risk factors and long term follow-up is necessary.
