Objective To survey the family status and child rearing associated with adolescent delinquency. Methods Data were taken from a sample of 86 delinquents at the Observation and Protection Center, Suratthani over the period of January to July 1997. The sample group was interviewed and answered questionnaires which covered general information adolescent delinquency, family status and child rearing. Results The majority of delinquents were male (94%) with a property offense (58%), resulting primarily from peer pressure, followed by those with a history of violence (resulting from rage). These delinquents came from broken families (44%). Their parents showed lack attention in terms of their friends (51%) and leisure activities (69%). Conclusions This research can now be applied in the training activities for both parents and associated workers in order to prevent subsequent repeated delinquence activity. Advice can be given to the target group in terms of peer choice, child rearing, social rule , and the benefits of creativity as a means of anger release. Such activities should help the prevention and reduction of adolescent delinquency.
