Objectives : The purposes of this study were to examine the abnormal psychosocial situations in children and adolescents attending the Child Mental Health Center with regard to 1) the frequency of each abnormal situation; 2) the relationship between psychosocial situations and age and intelligence; and 3) the relationship between psychosocial situations and each symptom cluster. Method : Each new patient's parent was interviewed using the parent interview schedule of the new version of Axis V abnormal psychosocial situations according to the ICD-10 multiaxial diagnosis. The patient's symptoms were collected by the new-patient recording form of the Child Mental Health Center. Results : Mean age of the 365 subjects was 9.37 years. Common abnormal psychosocial situations were overprotection (28%), anomalous parenting situation (22.5%), and overexpectation (22%). Among adolescent subjects significant abnormal psychosocial situations were abnormal intrafamilial relationship, parents' disability, abnormal upbringing, and acute life events respectively; whereas abnormal upbringing was the crucial factor among 6-12 year old subjects. Compared to other subjects in the study, children with low IQ had significantly more abnormal intrafamilial relationship and abnormal upbringing. There were significant correlations between emotional, social, and academic problems and several abnormal psychosocial situations. Conclusions : Among our subjects, the abnormal psychosocial situations significantly correlated with age, intelligence, and emotional, social, and academic problems.
