Objective: To study social behavior problems and intelligent levels of children and adolescents at three remand homes of observation and protection centers in the northern part of Thailand (including Chiangmai province, Pitsanulok province and Nakornsawan province). Method: All 208 subjects admitted during January 1997 were evaluated using the Thai Youth Checklist (TYC) and the Standard Progressive Matrices Set A–E (SPM). Results: Most of the children and adolescents were 14-18 years old (87.5%). Males were more than females. Most of their parents were employees and farmers. Most of the crimes committed were violating addiction act (44.76%) and stealing (38.9%). Most of the intelligent levels were at average (48.6%) and bright normal (20.2%). Most of social behavior problems were internalizing groups with withdrawn sign (70.7%) and anxious/depressed sign (58.2%). There was statistical significance (P=0.05) relation between intelligent and social behavior only in other problem group according to child behavior checklists (CBCL). There were neither statistical significance relation between intelligent levels and characteristics of crimes, nor between social behavior problems and characteristics of crimes. Conclusions: Although there were no statistical significance relations between intelligent levels, social behavior problems and characteristics of crimes, there were evidences that children and adolescents in this study being average and bright normal intelligent. Appropriate strategy and further studies in all levels of society in helping the children and adolescents and preventing them from doing crimes are recommended.
