Background The objective of this study is to validate Thai version of General Health Questionnaire 28 (GHQ-28), a popular screening test for psychiatric disorders. Methods The GHO-28 was first translated into Thai and back-translated into English to ensure correct translation. 300 representative Northeastern Thai adults were sampled to answer the questionnaire. One out of the three psychiatrist who had high interrater reliability interviewed each patients and made the diagnosis using ICD-10 criteria. Scores of GHQ-28 were then analysed to give internal consistency, sensitivity, specificity to see reliability and to yield an appropriate cut-off point. Results The Thai GHQ-28 gives 84% sensitivity and 76% specificity at threshold score of 5/6. Internal consistency is 91%. Conclusion The Thai GHQ-28 is reliable and valid as a screening instrument for psychiatric morbidity. Suggestions for further research were discussed.
