Insomnia includes symptoms of difficulty in falling, maintaining, and feeling of inadequate sleep. It can occur as a transient, short-term, or long-term insomnia. Insomnia is a common problem in general population and its incidence increases with age. Although most of insomnia symptoms are transient and/or can be relieved by behavior modification methods, hypnotic drugs are the most common treatment used to solve the problem. There are a variety of hypnotic drugs and sleep-promoting agents which are different in chemical structure and pharmacological effects. This article has reviewed effects on sleep parameters and adverse effects of chloral hydrate, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, zolpidem, zopiclone, zaleplon, l-tryptophan, melatonin, and barakol.
