ชื่อเรื่อง/Title: Internet as the Tool of Behavior Therapy in Social Phobia: A Case Report

แหล่งที่มา/Source: Journal of The Psychiatric Association of Thailand, Vol. 46 No.1 January-March 2001, P 49-54

รายละเอียด / Details:

A 34-year-old married female patient was diagnosed with social phobia, a mental disorder mainly characterized by fear of speaking with a stranger. When the Internet was introduced as a tool in behavior therapy, the patient managed to learn to talk, develop, and maintain a contact in the cyberspace. As she had gained more confidence, she gradually learned to develop actual relationships with people in her real life. The factors underlying the successful use of the Internet as a therapeutic tool include the fact that the Internet facilitates development of interpersonal relationships, its control of the speed of communication, and its reduction of anxiety caused by face-to-face communication. As such, the use of the Internet is regarded as a virtual-reality situation which enables the patient to practice desensitization. However, further studies are called for to determine the efficacy of the treatment involving the Internet and its possible impacts.
