รายละเอียด / Details:

This cross-sectional study was carried out in August 1995 to explore knowledge, attitude and preventive practice on AIDS among 15-59 year adult population in Sukhothai Province. Thirty- cluster sampling scheme was used to interviews 21,270 samples in the whole 709 villages of the province. The completion rate was 80.65 percent. Samples were interviewed with the structured questionnaires designed to measure knowledges, attitudes and practices relevant to the prevention of HIV infection. The analysis was done by EpiInfo program and the results were presented as percentages, means and standard deviation. Chi square statistics were used to test the possible relationship of various factors with the attitude and practice. Most people had good knowledge on AIDS that: AIDS was a contagious disease (84.02%); carriers could spread the infection (66.50%); the most effective prevention was to use a condom (93.59%); avoid drug injection (88.85%); no vaccination (13.37%); and only blood examination can diagnose the infection. Many people (42.34%) did not worry at all about the risk of contracting an infection. However, more than half (66.47%) would definitely use a condom if their spouse or partner requested. For the issue of living with AIDS, if some of their relatives were infected, they would treat them as usual (36.83%) and help them if possible (52.90%). These attitudes varied with age, sex, educational level and occupation with statistical significance at p-value ‹ 0.05. Results on the sexual behavior revealed that 75.35% ever had sexual experience. Many of them (40.77%) had the first sexual experience after 19 years of age. Eighty eight percent of the experienced ones refused any sexual relationship with a person other than their spouse or usual partner. Never use any condom for sexual activities during the past month (56.42%). Report on having sexually transmitted diseases during the past year for 6.18%. These behavior also varied with age, sex, educational level and occupation with statistical significance at p value < 0.05. These results suggest that a continuing health education program is necessary to focus on some weak issues, especially the use of condom and correction of some misunderstanding.
