Objective To study the life-time prevalence of psychiatric problems in Thailand. Method The multistage random sampling technique was used with 7,157 Thai people aged 15 to 60 years. Data were collected by means of in-depth interviews to screen the subjects who were likely to suffer from mental disorders. Diagnostic questionnaires were employed to confirm the screening results. Results The findings revealed the life-time prevalence of mental disorders among Thai people are as follows: mental retardation (1.3%), panic disorder (1.0%), hypochondriasis (0.5%), agoraphobia (0.8%), generalized anxiety disorder (0.7%), social phobia (0.3%), simple phobia (0.3%), obsessive compulsive disorder (0.3%), somatization (0.2%), mood disorder (1.8%), schizophrenia (0.17%), epilepsy (0.7%), alcohol abuse (6.0%), alcohol dependence (4.2%), amphetamine abuse (0.3%), amphetamine dependence (0.18%), cannabis abuse (0.22%), cannabis dependence (0.19%), opioid abuse (0.07%), opioid dependence (0.04%), volatile oil abuse (0.1%), volatile oil dependence (0.03%), tobacco dependence (3.4%), and suicidal attempt (1.0%). Conclusions The epidemiological data of psychiatric problems prevalent among the Thai population are applicable in policy planning for different mental health and psychiatric programs, as well as can be used as academic references for further studies.
