The objectives of this study was to survey dental problems of in-patients at Srithunya hospital during january to April 2001. There were 785 patients selected by simple random sampling from every psychiatric ward. The prevalence of dental caries was 80.1% and the mean decay was 4.0(4.2).Of this, treatment needs were extractm fill need, endodontic treatment and crown at 63%, 61%, 6% and 0.5% respectively. The prevalence of periodontal disease was 96.5%, classified as calculus, periodontal pocket and bleeding without calculus at 70.4%, 15.9% and 10.2% respectively. Oral status demanded partial and complete at 66.9% and 6.5% respectively.
