The purpose of this stuey was to determine the level of quality of life and mental health status interms of depression, stress, and suicidal and homicidal thoughts, along with other factors relating to quality of life in the Thai sample. Data were collected from 7,789 participants, through a multi-stage sampling method, among the population in every part of the country, except Bangkok Metropolitan area. The sample consisted of 65.6% women 34.4% men,an average age of 38.9+-12.2, 86.4% of the sample felt they were affected by the economic crisis. For quality of life in general, 20.5% of sample was found to be at hight level. The mental health aspect of quality of life was at the highest level. The poorest level of quality of life was found to be related to social relationship. Analysis of depressive conditions among the sample revealed that 38.1% requiring professional care, 38% had high or extremely high level of stress 7.6% had suicidal thoughts, 5.4% had homicidal thoughts. There was a reverse correlation between good quality of life and stress (G=-.35) depression (G=-0.52) suicidal thought (G=-0.52) and homicidal thought (G=-028) (p‹0.05). Factors related to high quality of life were being of male, older age, age single or married, having high education, fewer children, having private business, earning comfortable income, having good family relationship and no family members with psychiatric illness. The impact of the economic crisis was not strong enough to affect the auality of life of the Thail people but did affect their mental health status (p<0.05). In conclusion, the result of this study showed that the quality of life and mental health status of Thai people were not satisfactory and needed to be improved. The finding of this study be use as a base line data for further evaluation in the future.
