The purpose of this study was to compare suicide rate and characteristics of those who committed suicide in three districts of Chiang Mai province before and during the economic crisis. The information was collected by interviewing relatives and closed friends of cases. The statistics used were percentage and chi-square test. The results were as follows : The suicide rate of people in study area was increased significantly. Before economic crisis, HIV/AIDS was the most common cause of suicide mentioned by informants 35.4%. The second most common was economic problem 25.8%. During economic crisis, economic problem was the most common 28.7%. HIV/AIDS was the second 26.0%. Other characteristics of cases I.e. age, sex, education, warning sign, depressive symptoms of the two study period were not different.
