The study of the Thanyarak drug dependence therapeutic community during the first decade 1986-1995 showed that the number of cases among residents was 1,878 male-1687, female-191. The number of residents who had completed the course at the Thanyarak therapeutic community more than 18 months totalled only 160 cases male-1547 female-6 Among the 160 cases, the mean age was 32.8+-6.2 years. Those with an education higher than primary school totalled 66.2 percent. Intravenous drug ude of heroin was 91.5 percent and the mean durationof using the drug was 12.3+-5.9 years. All cases were followed up for five years, during which time it was found that 68.1 percent were still abstaining from drug use, 31.9 percent relapsed and 6.9 percent had died.
