รายละเอียด / Details:

Following the report of Cooper in 1954 on the result of treating Parkin-sonism by ligating anterior choroidal artery the author studied this vessel in 30 hemispheres of brains collected at the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine and Siriraj Hospital, Comparing the result also with that studied by capenter et al 1954 and others before him.096.6% of these arteries take origin from the internal carotid artery and 3.3% from the junction of anterior and middle cerebral arteries. By in jecting indian ink into the vessel he found that this vessel distributes into the following parts of brain;- optic tract, lateral part of cerebral peduncle, piriform cortex (uncus) hippocampus, fascia dentata, amygdaloid nucleusm tail of caudate nucleus internal part of globus pallidus posterior part of posterior limp of internal capsule, beginning of optic radiation, accoustic radiation and anterior external part of thalamus. From this study the author agrees with the opinion of Capenter et al 1954 that the treatment of Parkinsonism by ligating the anterior choroidal artery is not an exact procedure. The artery is not an end artery but anastomoses with the neighbouring vessels. Hwo much necrosis of parts of the brain could not be predicted. Besides this he found that 30% of these vessels also give a large branch to the temporal lobe which would he affected also by ligating the vessel. The author concludes the paper by discussing the various theories why ansotomy or ligating the anterior choroidal artery could modify the symptoms in Parkinsonism
