Septicemia in drug addicts was a common problem especially in intravenous drug user (IVDU). A retrospective study in 114 drug addicts was done at Thanyarak Hospital (Drug Addicts Hospital) during 1989-1994. There were no difference in sex age education occupation, amount of heroin use per day and duration of heroin use from other groups of drug addicts. Septicemia was detected in the first two days of admission in 87 cases (76.3%), 14 cases in the 5th-7th day and only 5 cases in 13th-14th day. The clinical complications were mostly in lungs pneumonia was found in 47 cases (41.2%) jaundice in 24 cases (21.0%) acute renal impairment in 18 cases (15.8%) and anti-HIV+evin 63 cases (55.3%) respectively. Staphylococcus aureus was a major responsible pathogen (110 cases). Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was found in 85 cases (77.3%). Jaundice or acute renal impairment increase mortality rate (1.7 and 2.5 times respectively). Mortality rate in anti HIV+ve group was 1.9 times higher than anti HIV-ve group.
