The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to survey family coping with the critical illness of a family member, and to determine what factors influenced the coping strategies families used while their relative was in a critical care unit. Guided by the Lazarus and Folkman Model of Coping, Stress ans Appraisal, research questions explored family coping profiles' and the relationship of selected factors to family coping. The sample was 205 non-random, volunteer families recruited from on hospital located in Bangkok, Thailand. The research instruments used were: a Family Information Sheet, a Critically Ill Patient Information Sheet a Coping Scale a APACHW III Scale, and a Family Perception of Severity of Illness. Data were analyzed using descriptive and correlaational techiques. Findings indicated that common categories of coping strategies used were: hoping ; spiritual, religious, and deity-related strategies; controlling and meditation ; seeking infromation; and acceptance. Age, sex, education, income, and past experience with criticalillness of the family member were not associated with coping. Significant predictor of coping was family members' perceived severity of illness of the critically ill patients. Replication of this study using a longitudinal and repeated-measured design was suggested.
